A good read: The Angels of Lockhart

Edited to add a website supplied by the author: www.monarchpublishinghouse.com.
I recently finished the most intriguing book! The book,The Angels of Lockhart, was written by Thomas Wiley, a physician from Jackson, Ms.

The book is a work of fiction but is based on fact. I don't want to give away too much information, but one of the main characters in the book, Ms Lizzy, is the step great grandmother to Thomas Wiley's wife. The book takes place in Lockhart, which is not too far from where I live. Ms. Lizzy had 7 children and all of them died in infancy or early childhood. What is even more intriguing is that each child died before the other was born! That part of the story is really true. After reading this book, my husband and I decided to stop by the Lockhart Cemetery where the babies are all buried. This picture below is the entrance to the cemetery.

Here is the Lockhart Church right in front of the cemetery. The church doors were padlocked, but we were able to peek through a crack in the door.
This picture shows some of the graves of the babies in the family plot. Someone has been placing little bouquets of white flowers at the foot of each grave. They are all lined up just like the author described in the book. Ms. Lizzy and her husband are not buried in this cemetery with their babies, but buried in Meridian which is close by.
I won't tell you how the book ended or give out any more information...just in case you ever have a chance to read this book. It was well written and an easy read. One of the reasons it was so intriguing to me is because it is based on fact and took place here in my home county.
Don't you enjoy reading a book that takes place somewhere that you are familiar with?
Thanks for stopping by today and happy reading!

Diane, after reading your post about "The Angels of Lockhart," I want to read it.

What a sad story, and I can't help but wonder why Lizzie and her husband weren't buried in the Lockhart Cemetery with their babies.

Thanks for sharing this book with us. I looked at it recently in a local gift shop, and think I'll pick up a copy today.

Sincerely,

Janie

Thank you for your comment on my blog! I was flattered to see you- the blogger with that fantastic porch and landscaping- said nice things about MY house.

This book sounds intriguing. I may look for it next time I'm at the library. I DO love books that are set locally. I used to live in Charleston, SC and loved to read fiction set in that area especially.

Sounds like an interesting story.

I do love reading books that take place someplace I'm familiar with. I LOVE Door County, Wisconsin ~ OUR vacation spot ~ and in 2000, I found this book, LaVyrle Spencer's best-selling book, "Bittersweet." It actually takes place in Fish Creek, in Door County, at a lovely B&B, called the Thorpe House Inn. The author actually wrote it WHILE she was staying there.

~Blessings,
Jan

It sounds like a good book. I just ordered it from Amazon. :) I know what you mean about a book being written about something that happened close to home. I feel that way when I read about Lizzie Border. It was a tragedy and all, but something about reading about someplace you have been is intriguing!

Thanks for the review!

take care,
Dawn

Morning Diane! I haven't read a fiction book in years but your review made me want to pick this one up! How sad the parents aren't with the children? It's nice someone is remembering them with the flowers though! Have a great day - Jeannette

I want to read that book right now. I love your description and photos.

We are leaving for Raleigh this morning to deliver the rest of our grands. Sigh. I will miss them, but peace and quiet sounds like heaven.
Ahhhhhhh sweet quiet!!!

I want to read it....that sounds interesting.....and it is so neat you were able to go to the actual cemetary where those precious babies are buried. Why wouldn't the parents be buried where the babies were?...guess I need to read it.

Hi, Diane....that story sounds like a very interesting story. I'm not much of a reader....(I can't still long enough)!
But i think i could get into a book like this.

I have a friend that lives in Meridian.

I am going to try and find this book! You made it sound so intriguing! And how neat is that, you were able to visit the real cemetary "behind" the book!
