Look what’s blooming at my house- my Hot Lips Salvia! Today I thought I saw a hummingbird fluttering near by, but by the time I went outside with the camera, it was gone.
If you want to attract humming birds, try to get one of these plants this spring at the nursery. 
A couple of years ago, I rooted a piece of this plant for my daughter, and now she has taken cuttings and is rooting it for her friends. It is very hardy and comes back each year. My plant did not die back at all last winter even though we had some very cold weather. It is a great investment!

Perennial, evergreen. Sun. Flowers are variable ranging from pure white or red to
red with white, very unusual. 2'x2'. Low water. Attracts hummingbirds.

ReplyDeleteBreathtaking, Diane! My hummingbird feeder attracts hummingbirds more than anything I've planted. However, my all-time favorite flower is Dianthyus (not sure about the spelling). I've had them for years in every place we've lived. They're supposed to be annuals, but mine come back, year after year. They have the prettiest blooms in all varieties of colors.

Diane, my visiting is taking quite a hit with my cousin here and therapy. I missed this post. I love your flowers and want to plant them. Do they spread themselves? My beautiful ice plants are not coming back at all. We had single digit weather which was very severe. Thanks for sharing these pretty hummingbird flowers.

Diane, this is just lovely. Wish I could help, but I don't know about hummingbird plants. My MIL has a feeder, and she has tons of them. They like to go back to the same place year after year and feed.

Any hummingbird garden should have a long season of overlapping bloom. I would suggest including plants such as the petunia, annual red salvia, autumn sage and shrimp plants, or the firebush.

ReplyDeleteI love hummingbirds but I never see them here. I've read that they love the color red, so I imagine any red or dark pink flower would be attractive to them. There are also special hummingbird feeders thta you can fill with nectar and hand, Duncraft dot com should sell them!
If it brings in butterflies, I like it. I'm trying to plant more and more evergreens so I am surrounded by beauty all year.

ReplyDeleteI've never seen a hummingbird at the shore house, but the neighbors swear they are there so I'm thinking hummingbird flowers and/or feeder are in order.
Hummers love red salvias, and they are so easy to grow! Tell PaintinPatti that I'm sure they'd grow for her, they survive the blazin' hot Texas summer, so I think they'd survive, even flourish for her, too!
