One of my favorite things to do this time of the year it to thumb through my Christmas magazines for ideas while sitting near the fire (okay the gas logs. LOL)
I usually keep my copies of Southern Living and Mississippi magazine for a few years. While looking through them, I usually find a recipe or two to try, and get some great decorating ideas.
I know all of you have seen the commercial from years past where the guests all show up at their destination all bringing the green bean casserole! We have had it with our holiday meals lots of times in the past.
Here is a different way to serve green beans that our family really enjoyed that I tried last year. It is from the Dec. 2007 Mississippi Magazine.
I don't have pictures because I wasn't blogging last year when I made it.
Simply Great Green Beans
6 (14 .5 oz.) cans whole green beans
1/2 stick butter
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup Hormel real crumbled bacon
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Drain green beans, and pour into a 9 by 13 inch baking dish. Set aside. Melt butter, and stir in brown sugar. Pour butter and sugar mixture over green beans. Sprinkle with crumbled bacon. Cover with foil, and bake for 30 minutes.
Yield: 10-12 servings.
I usually mix them up the night before and refrigerate. They are so easy to make and very tasty!

Hi Diane...thanks for this different way with green beans... I love green beans just about anyway they come...I'll have to give this easy way a try. ;-) Bo
Your green beans sound delicious, Diane ... and easy to make. I'll have to remember your recipe during the holidays.
Aren't those old Southern Living magazines treasures ... I don't care for their new format, though, do you?
I am going to pass this along to Britt who is hosting Thanksgiving this year!
I love bacon...and this sounds just wonderful! Thanks for sharing.
take care,
Dawn

Good Morning Diane! Great recipe! Not to sound stupid, but the bacon...do you cook it and then crumble it? Thanks for letting me know. Would love to try this one for Thanksgiving! I will be posting recipes later today! ~Rhonda :)
Sounds soooooooooo delicious! I think I'm going to have to make this!!
Diane this does sound good and easy! I am all about easy this time of year especially!
I'm going to copy and try this recipe. Meanwhile, tag, you're it! Come visit to copy the game.
This sounds so good! I have green beans on my Thanksgiving menu. I might give these a try. Thanks for the recipe.
Isn't it funny about taking pictures since entering bloglandia? I often wonder when I'm snapping pictures here and there, if people know I'm a blogger or just think I'm a crazy old lady with a camera!
YES!!! this is my favorite way to make green beans now.....I've gotten to where I add some garlic and some soy sauce too......everyone loves them! Yummy!!!!!!!

Oh, and I use the bacon pieces that come in the jar....a tad bit healthier!

Good Morning Diane ~ Yum~ola! I just might make this next week. I too love green beans...thank you for sharing. I am a total magazine junkie...and I know that I need and intervention...but don't want one...not now, not never~ever! My husband just suggested last night that we store some in the garage...yeah right!
Happy middle of the week!
Smiles ~ Ramona
Any dish with butter and bacon is on top of my list; I will try that this year. I got so burnt out on the "green bean casserole from hell" I stopped making it several years ago. Unfortunately, my sister in law insists on it, so she brings it, and I make plain green beans, usually the Italian cut. This recipe will give a new twist to the beans; I'll let you know if they are a hit!
Diane, the recipe sounds so good and so easy. This is a keeper.
There is a reference to you on my blog today. You can play along if you like or not. It was fun but very long. It took me a long time to complete this tag LOL. I know how busy you are so I wanted to let you know it will be fine if you do not care to play along.:)
Have a great day.
Hugs...Jeanne
Hi there, I printed your green bean recipe since I'm in charge of that dish for Thanksgiving. Thanks for sharing. Stop by my blog today, I'm having a giveaway. Take care

We have the infamous green bean casserole every year...and thankfully we love it but I'm definately going to give your recipe a try. It sounds great! Thank you!
I just found your blog and am enjoying it very much!
I just looked at my Turkey Day menu and see I just have green beans entered...sounds so generic doesn't it...I think I'll try your recipe.
Thanks!☺
Yum, I love this green bean casserole alternative. Sounds yummy!
Hi Diane!
I just did your book tag -thanks so much for thinking of me!
Isn't it funny how we didn't think to document everything we did in our lives before blogging? LOL! I often think: "I wish I had a photo of this or that so I could blog about it!" LOL!!
I save many magazines like you do, and I too enjoy looking back in them for recipes. Thanks for the new green bean one!
Hugs, Pat
Ohhh girl that sounds delicious...I love green beans but not really a fan of green been casserole the traditional way...I love em with big old chunks of ham in them! I bet this would really be good..I will have to try this! Girl I love reading thru my magazines over & over again...not a book though! lol Hope you have had a great day...I've been on my feet all day and I am just now sitting down!
OK...I'm back to tell you your green beans were a hit with my DH...and he's not really a green bean fan...also, we hardly ever eat CANNED veggies...so I'm going to try thawed frozen green beans next time...the only thing I changed was to add salt & pepper! Thanks Diane, this is a keeper!
Hugs, ;-) Bo
Hey there! FYI for tomorrow, Mr. Linky is working again :-) I'm not suer what happened today, but their site was down so the widget didn't work. Take care!

Good morning, thanks for stopping by to visit me! Your recipe sounds delicious. Although I have been know to eat traditional green bean casserole leftovers straight out of the fridge! Hope you have a blessed day, "talk" soon!
PS I love Southern Living magazine too! Have you seen the Christmas issue?
Good morning Diane, thanks for your comment last night. Please take your time when doing the tag. It does take lots of time with all the linking and such. Please do not feel obligated at all, I do not mind. Have a great day.
Hugs...Jeanne
Bacon makes EVERYTHING taste better! :)
I am not really a green bean fan nor a fan of the traditional green bean casserole. Out of habbit I was going to go ahead and make a side of it for Thanksgiving but when I saw this recipe I quickly asked hubby which one he wanted to have. So your green beans have won out! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe.
Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours.
~Blessings
